If you believe it to be reality, its either a true belief or a false one. If its true, then it is reality, it does exist independently of the idea. Even if its false its a belief about reality, about what exists independently of the thought, just not a correct belief about reality. Either way we are talking about reality, independent of the idea, just possibly presenting a false idea about that reality.
