To civilian ears it doesn't sound respectful, just freaky.

I disagree, and anybody who would make a negative judgment about that is nobody I would want to work with. I've never been in the military, but I would often address my superiors as Sir or Ma'am. I can remember only one time when somebody asked me if I had been in the military.
