A note from Mark Hulbert on the broader market--

Forget Dow 13,000; real story is Wilshire 5000

All eyes this morning have been focused on the psychologically important levels on the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.12% (13,000) and the NASDAQ Composite COMP -0.27% (3,000).

But that focus has diverted our attention from an even bigger story with far more investment significance: The huge 2007-2009 bear market is on the verge of being completely overcome.

Yes, you read that right.

Consider the Wilshire 5000 XX:W5000 -0.20% index, which reflects the combined value of all publicly-traded stocks in the U.S. Taking dividends into account, this benchmark is now just 1.7% below its all-time high set on Oct. 9, 2007. That means that just a day or two of strong market action would push the market into record high territory.

And that in turn means that an investor who was unlucky enough to have invested a lump sum in the stock market on Oct. 9, 2007, is on the verge of being made whole again — provided he invested in an index fund pegged to the overall market and he had the courage and discipline to stick with this investment through thick and thin.

That’s incredible. The worst bear market since the 1930s is on the verge of being erased in just three years’ time.
