Tell me this longnshort: do you believe tobacco smoking can cause lung cancer? Or that excess weigh and a bad diet can lead to health issues?

Presumably you do believe these things (I hope). But why? If you "follow the money" you shouldn't believe in them. After all, many billions have gone into scientific research demonstrating the dangers of tobacco and unhealthy diet. Many careers have been built on these issues and much money has been distributed. So why hasn't this corrupted the scientists? Why should you believe the scientific community? If you follow the money you shouldn't accept them at all. Instead you should be smoking one cigarette after another and chasing twinkies with beers, all the while telling folks that you're not a believer in the big liberal tobacco and diet scam. After all if you "follow the money" then tobacco and twinkies must be very good for you. Chow down!

It's a close analogy. Back a few decades ago the tobacco companies spent a lot of money trying to discredit scientific research. They funded institutes that tried to undermine research and tried to spread misinformation. A lot of people died as a result, believing this nonsense. It took a generation for the scientific truth to finally prevail over those vested interests.

Just like GW now.
