I thought it was Winston Churchill that said, "A man of twenty who is not a liberal has no heart; a man of forty who is not a conservative has no brains>" But this is one of those things that gets attributed to lots of people.

I always liked Robert Frost's statement that he never dared to be radical when he was young for fear he would be too conservative when he was old.

I am a liberal who agrees with almost every view I have ever seen expressed in The Economist. Not in the Wall Street Journal and still less in Barrons. I am a Burkean conservative, too, who used to be a member of the American Civil Liberties Union until they opposed Jimmy Carter because they said a Southerner could not be trusted to advance civil rights.
