Exactly. Where I took issue with his remark was not as it pertains to him; rather, as it pertains to the entire category. Just from the physicians I deal with or have dealt with over the last 20 years, I can tell you most are very much interested in the money.

There is no doubt that becoming a physician requires an insane level of drive and desire and willingness to sacrifice, as well as a ridiculously high tolerance for boredom (that, alone would have stopped me!)

But I just rarely encounter physicians who seem to have that level of interest in medicine once they've been in practice for a while.

For most, I think it is a combination of the two. I believe my personal physician is very much interested in medicine, but he has done everything perfectly to maximize his profits (e.g., limiting the number of Medicare patients he sees). I would guess most are in that boat.
