There might or might not have been a methane connection to the Permian extinction event. They don't know what caused it and methane releases are one of a bunch of possible explanations. It could have been a meteor strike - so maybe instead of worrying about methane we should launch a rush program to put up a meteor shield. Or it may have been a result of volcanic eruptions ... don't know what we should do about that.
