The difference between first degree and second degree murder is one of intent. One is guilty of first degree murder if you form a specific intent before hand to take someone's life. Second degree is where one acts with such disregard that it is likely that death will result.

The jury probably concluded he didn't go there intending to kill her, but he acted in such a violent way that he should have known that his actions would cause her death. He'll probably get 10-20 years.
