Mohan, re As you know the U.S has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan in the conventional sense of the term and why do you think that is? It is because the U.S also admits that Taiwan is part of China and there is only one China and it is the P.R.C, not P.R.C and R.O.C. Taiwan (R.O.C) is a temporary phenomenon at best.
I do not believe that the United States believes in the "one China" policy. The US respects the fact that Taiwan was founded to escape communist China. Also, if China attempts to take Taiwan by force, I believe the US will step in on the side of Taiwan. Remember the Chinese navy exercises in the straits of Taiwan (1996?)? Note that the US immediately diverted warships to the area, and it wasn't to help China. Re the diplomatic relations, or lack of them with Taiwan, I don't know anything about that, but can only conclude that we don't want to irritate the PRC over that.
The minitue China becomes a democracy as many think it will,
Mohan. China is firmly communist, with no indications of that changing. Don't confuse economic reforms with political reforms. There are still many very important human rights abuse issues in China. The practice of forced abortions on women is abhorrent and evil, and this is only one issue. Democratic countries don't force women to abort children that they wish to have.
