If "the rich need to pay more taxes for the privilege of being an American" reminds you of Tradable Citizenship, you have totally misunderstood the idea and got it completely back to front: <
That concept reminds me an awful lot of Mq's theory about buying citizenship. It might not be what he meant, but it amounts to the same thing.

Taxes are a one way street. The money goes from the producer to the authority. The "privileged American" cannot sell their citizenship. They do not own it.

In Tradable Citizenship, the citizen could sell it again, for a profit if the country has been run well. Owning one would not be a privilege, it would be just another property right like owning a house, car, or shares in a company.

Geithner is treating people like cash cows to be milked, or a flock of sheople to be fleeced. People who like freedom and property rights would prefer something other than being privileged to send him heaps of money to pour down the gurgler on self-dealing politicians, supporters, favoured companies and electorates who vote them back into power.
