As a retired sailor with zero disability I do not use the VA for anything. My health care comes from a program called Tricare. It used to be Champus.

While I agree with almost uw said I do differ on one point. I think one reason the system is slow are frivolous claims. Just before retirement everyone had to attend a Transition Assistance Program. We were all encouraged by a speaker from the VA to find a reason to get disability. This was 16 years ago so I will not say we were encouraged to lie but I do remembering them saying that anyone would have no trouble getting 10% for hearing loss.

Since that time I have been encouraged by many vets to scrub my service record for reasons to apply for disability and called stupid for not doing it. Mind, this is all anecdotal, I have no idea if it is wide spread. Nor do I know how much it clogs the system.

I do have to say in the interests of full disclosure, after 15 years retired with out being registered with VA someone got to my wife to try and enroll me. I am sorry she did but figure it is less stress on the system to let it be rather than try and turn it off. So every month we get a letter saying they are still processing it. If it is ever approved I will be the lowest priority which I do not need and will never use.

As uw said, the VA has serious work to do.
