For one thing, they know the email addresses of each identity, which (if I remember correctly) is the one required item, in addition to a name, that must be supplied. A person could register several identities with one email address and conceivably each identity could be a different person in the same household, but by monitoring the messages attributed to those at the same email address, the sender reveals his identity to any inquiring, curious webmaster.
