Its seems as if the B-52 is the plane that never goes away. In about a month and a half it will be the 60th anniversary of the 1st flight. From first flight to the last one goes out of service might wind up being over 90 years...

Off hand the only military planes that I can think of that had even close to that degree of longevity are the C-130, Mig21, A1 Skyraider, and the KC-135 Stratotanker, but the B-52 has them all beat already, and the KC-135 will probably be replaced in the near future, the Skyraiders is gone, the Mig-21 is only in service in export markets not in Russia, and the C-130s has changed more over the years with new designs as late as the late 90s and new aircraft still being built.

If the new tanker program gets canceled because of budget cuts - Can you imagine a 2040 bomb strike were a B-52 gets fueled up in route by KC-135. Both aircraft having been built in the early 60s (and the initial designs done in the 50s)...
