For you scientific types, here is a rehash ofwhat I THINK bpi can do. It is not guaranteed correct, but may serve as a possable guideline. Comments appreciated. Bacteria------------->PMN .(produces) . (releases) . . LPS BPI .(stimulates) . (Blocks) . . CD-14 IL-1,IL-6,IL-8 . (all attenuate) . Lbp . . TNF Notes:bpi + lpb potentiates bacterial killing(top of chart) -BPI neutralizes lps (early in pathway) -The reduced production (stimulation) of lbp effectively may attenuate TNF production. -The neutralization of LPS (early in the pathway) may affect complement activation(host response) as follows. Complement activation system c1q . c3.............bpi blocks......>c3a,c3b......>shock . c4............bpi block........>c4a.............>shock . c5.............bpi block.......>c5a............>shock . (bad potions of complement blocked) c5b . c5b ............>membrane attack complex & cell lysis) (good portion of host defense NOT blocked) All above is compiled from information I believe to be true, I could have misunderstood it or it may be in error.
