Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 4S likely gained market share in smartphones in February, as the handset continued to sell well in the U.S. and expanded in markets overseas.

In a research note Monday, Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley said his firm's sales channel checks "indicated the iPhone 4S maintained and likely expanded its dominant share of the U.S. market." The iPhone 4S also took market share from competitors in international markets such as Brazil, Russia and China.

Canaccord said smartphone vendors HTC and Research In Motion (RIMM) lost ground in February as they struggled to compete against Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S II handsets.
