Anybody who doesn't think the petroleum markets are driven by speculation (as opposed to the true cost of production + profit) is an idiot.

Speculation isn't necessarily a bad thing, and can have positive effects for the consumer, but for inelastic commodities like oil it's the consumer that gets shafted.
