Jay- According to the Q3 earnings release sandisk.com, CompactFlash accounted for 56% of sales, with the rest going to the PCMCIA types of flash card. I think next year, the MMC will be even more important than CF. There is a new writeup about the MMC at sandisk.com. There are all kind of applications for the MMC in the cell phone. A 2MB MMC can store 30 mn of voice messages. A 10MB MMC can store 6-8 songs. Stock quotes and news can also be downloaded into an MMC. Derek posted that he saw GM engineers at Sandisk's Comdex party looking at the MMC. I thought over the weekend why GM may want to pick the MMC instead of other types of flash as there is plenty of room in an automobile to put a larger flash card like a CF. I just come up with an answer that people like to carry their own MMC in their wallet for instance, and when they get into a car, they like to pop their MMC into a device that reads the MMC to retrieve the data. For instance, I could have map or phone numbers of friends in my own MMC. Then I could use a rental car but have my own MMC. Samples of the MMC will be shipped in January 98. I think several design wins may be announced shortly after it. Mike.
