I did a little number manipulation to show how FSII compared to the average of the 37 semi-equip stocks I have been posting. The table is shown below. The starting date of the comparison is the week closing 4/25/97. The first three columns show the sum of the closing price for the 37 stocks and the cumulative percent gain/loss from 4/25. Columns 4 and 5 show the same comparison for FSII. The last column compares FSII gains compared to the gains of the 37 stocks. Through July, FSII trailed the average 37 stock gain by a relatively small amount. Then, beginning in August and continuing through the middle of September, the disparity was striking. Since then, FSII has improved considerably showing favorably for most of the weeks compared to the 37 stocks. I find it ironic that at the close on Friday, FSII is 1 percent better than the 37 stocks when compared to the closing price of 4/25.

Compared to the August/mid-September time frame, FSII has held up much better than the sum of the 37 stocks. On the other hand, the comparison of last Friday shows a parity with the closing prices on 4/25. In other words, measuring over the last 7 months, FSII and the 37 stock average are up 36 and 35 percent respectively. Also, in other words, since I have been fully invested in FSII over that period, I effectively invested in the average performer, not the stellar outstanding stock I thought I bought.
I still have hopes, however, that next year will be different!! |
