Here's a quote attributed to M. McLuhan in Gleick's book that you'll like since it reminds me of "PopeGreg"...:

"The alphabet is a technology of visual fragmentation and specialism which leads to a desert of classified data."

In other words print offers only a narrow channel of communication which is linear and fragmented according to Gleick who also goes on: By contrast speech with face to face interaction alive with gesture, touch, etc. engages all the senses... if the ideal communication is a meeting of the souls, then writing is a sad shadow of the ideal.

He goes on about acoustic & tattle information and all that.

Now, Solon... I know you're not much on (even) the EXISTANCE of Jesus the Christ... but I think we would agree that if he DID exist he was pretty DAMN SMART to stick to his oral tradition (I think Soc spoke extensively on this topic as well) rather than writing something down HE KNEW would be nothing but a "sad shadow" of his actual words!!

AS IF HE KNEW there would be dopes like PopeGreg in the future proclaiming to know "THE WORD OF THE LORD"!!!!!! LOL, didn't write down ONE crummy WORD.... one smart dude I'd say!
