But when and at what cost? Right now they are sampling the SoC and it will take a company a while to put together a systems, test out the concept, put together a business case, and line up the suppliers. Rumor is that Apple pay about $75 (as compare to $50+-) for the glass in Ipad 3. And what about the battery? Apple has a massive battery (more than double the capacity of the one in Ipad 2) in order to support the denser display, more backlited LEDs, G4 LTE and still have the same 9-10 hours of operations. Who has that engineering work done already given that they just sample the SoC. And then how do one line up the supplier for the glasses? Apple is going to have heck of a time to keep up the production given that Samsung is the only company producing the glass now. LG and Sharp is going to start volume production in April. Where will the spare capacity come from and when? Once you add up all the cost of the new parts, it is going to be hard to make money unless they are Apple since Apple can buy everything with volume discount. My best guess is that it will be at least 9 months to a year before anyone has a tablet that match Ipad 3 spec today and they will be breaking even or loss money.. I own AAPL stocks but Android phone (Samsung), so I am excited to wait for major discount later this year as the new Android tablet come out (Asus Trasformer Infinity Pad) and they need to undercut Ipad with lower price point since they cannot match the spec...
