Until this past Saturday evening when I viewed the surprisingly excellent film "Moneyball", I had never heard of Billy Beane and how he revolutionized the management of baseball teams on a small budget (ie. Oakland Athletics) with his application of "SABERMETRICS" to ballplayer decisions. en.wikipedia.org

The objective statistical methods employed by the "A's" reminded me of some of the modern portfolio methodologies used to balance risk, diversify investment portfolios and choose mutual funds. From my viewpoint, the film was totally awesome - I highly recommend it!

"Moneyball" is based upon the true storey described in Michael Lewis' book by the same name. Brinker has interviewed Lewis multiple times on Moneytalk in recent years - the latest being about his current book "Boomerang".

When I hear all the whining about the challenges of budget cuts to public schools, the union benefits to teachers who only work 9 months per year, and the falling grades of students who are victims of terrible tenured unaccountable teachers who can't be fired; wouldn't it be nice if teachers could be evaluated and rated with an objective and meaningful rating system like "Sabermetrics", rewarded for their successful outcomes in the metrics which matter, and fired for subpar performance like the rest of the Workingstiffs (Justa excluded) in the private sector. Who died and made teachers a protected class of workers anyway? !!!

JMHO,
