"Special Type of Immune Cell May Be Key to Avoiding AIDS"
New York Times (11/21/97) P. A18
New findings from researchers at Boston's Massachusetts
General Hospital suggest that high levels of HIV-specific helper
T cells may be critical for the body's control of the virus. The
researchers, led by Dr. Bruce Walker, reported in Friday's issue
of the journal Science that tests using antiviral drugs to treat
people recently infected with HIV show that the drugs cause the
viral load to drop, allowing the body's immune systems to produce
T cells that attacked HIV. "This suggests there is a window of
time during the acute phase of infection when antiviral treatment
can rescue the helper T cell response to HIV," explained Walker.
