I'll have to check out MTN and UNITEL. I once own an oil driller (Ranger Oil) who drilled offshore Angola. That was around the time oil was prolific and heading to $5. It was a grandmother stock that got taken out as it bottomed ou. Nothing like getting 50 cents on the dollar from the new rising kid on the block. Other than a brief revolution that I faintly remember hearing about, Angola has likely done well in recent years. It certainly seemed like a more stable environment than the countries to it's east and to it's north.

I don't ever remember MTN having Angolan operations. Does UNITEL compete with MTN or would it be a candidate for their takeover?

Is Angola more similar to South Africa or the rabble-rouser dictatorships? I suspect it is more economically prosperous than most but that wealth is not likely as well distributed as in South Africa. If I remember it right, the big industries in Angola are mining, oil and farming? The first two require foreign capital to prosper and the later is likely dependent upon government controlled land ownership and local demand. One doesn't hear of many going to Angola either as a tourist destination or as an NGO effort. I suspect it might be a country somewhat like Equador with tight militaristic control of a large aboriginal population by a wealthy elite. Is that right?
