®I have no agenda since salvation is not dependent on having your creation theory correct.¯
Amen, Amen, Amen!!!
I spent way too much time in the early 70's studying the theories of creation instead of concentrating on the important things.
My bookcase is still littered with books by Morris and others from the Institute for Creation Research. I have even attended lectures by Dr. Henry M. Morris who was the Director of the Institute at the time. I used to be particularly intrigued with the Gap Theory. The theories are great for small talk but have no bearing on my Christian faith today.
Today I accept and worship God as creator period. Some would even call me a theo-evolutionist since for the purpose of my work in health care I use the evolution theory as a working model. As a working model it serves my purposes. Is it correct, who knows?
To those of us who believe in a dynamic view of inspiration of the Bible, the possiblility of evolution being correct is not a threat to our Faith system.
I believe the reason many of these theories continue to thrive within the Christian community is because literal-minded Christians are trying to rescue their King James Version from scientific developments.
For example, where did old bones come from?
Theory one, God created old bones to confuse the scientists. Somehow this don't seem consistent with God's stated purpose in the Bible.
Theory two, the Gap theory. God created the earth in verse one. Since everthing God created was good this must have been too. But we find it without form and void in the second verse, therefore we concluded God destroyed it between verse 1 and 2. We go elsewhere proof texting throughout the Old Testament to show that God originally placed the arch angel along with several of the other angels on earth to play with the dinosaurs. But the angels went astray and started thinking of themselves as God, so God destroys the earth and recreates it starting in verse 3. The old bones that are found are from the first creation. I haven't seen any angels dug up yet!
Theory three, science is just wrong in their dating of bones.
Personally, I find all three theories unacceptable.
But to me it really doesn't matter since, I believe the primary purpose of the Creation Story was to worship and celebrate God the creator and not to be a scientific text.
