Up to now, I have refrained from commenting on Mike Daisey's fiasco. Because he and I worked at the Public Theater. Felt wrong.
Doesn't anymore. Now that he has come almost clean, and changed his tune as well as his show, I feel it's OK so say what I feel about this, especially since Woz got the story SO WRONG!
Little background. I make a living in theatre. Making photos. Nobody thinks that what I do is photojournalism. I am a hired gun, who creates publicity stills for theatres. Not a whole lot different than creating fiction for the stage, which is clearly also NOT journalism.
Mike took his stage play to a news show. Repeatedly claimed his fiction was absolutely based on fact, and could be sold to the general public as journalism, not fiction.
Then he was proven to be a liar. Key "facts" in his "journalism" were total fiction. Sold by him to the public as facts.
Absolutely unacceptable. Sorry Woz, this is NOT the way to change policy, anywhere in the world, no matter how much we may dislike whatever it is that needs to change.
On the other hand Woz, given you never had a problem with phreaking, I am not at all surprised with your position on this. Just deeply saddened. :-((( |
