If we lived in a tropical region I would have a backup generator. Friends had a condo on Sanibel and when the hurricane hit the ultimate damage was mold due to no power for the AC. While Cle is 80F today - amazing - I see no need for one here. The worst I can imagine is losing the food in the freezer from an extended power outage. I note that some people do have gasoline powered generators for backup.

As for alternate fueled cars it would seem to me that a plug in hybrid would make some sense. However, for our life style - I am not interested. The price of gasoline is only a nuisance - covered calls and short puts make it such.
