The Retina display is always running if the iPad is on and awake. That article also suggests that users could buy the 45 watt or 80 watt MacBook chargers, but they don't have the right connector for an iPad.

A better solution would be not to expect the iPad to charge while running the most CPU and graphics-intensive game you can find. I don't think people want to play games with the charger cable connected anyway.
