That is probably true. The experiences I described are mostly middle class to upper middle class.

You appear to define the problem so narrowly that it is unattainable. Poverty to riches in a lifetime. Since you defined it so narrowly, you can then take the satisfaction of calling the experience of working hard and living below one means a "mythology".

You remind me of my best friend's (from high school) mother... a liberal. We argued current events all the time. But, she ridiculed my hard work ethics and relentless ambition to make money. She shaped her son, my friend, such that he never had ambition. The reason was if you never set the bar too high, then you will never fail.

My life has been to set the bar too high and to repeatedly fail... and occasionally succeed. I am absolutely an anathema to liberals who preach "don't try, you won't succeed".

While there are never any guarantees, my experience has shown me that people who work hard at an early age do much better than average.
