But Metro is fresh, if nothing else.

I have not tried it on a touch screen, but when I run Windows 8 (it's a free download) via Parallels Desktop 7 on my MBP and desktop hackintosh, I find Metro to be nothing but frustratingly useless. Works something like this:

As you know, since you also tried it, underneath Metro there isn't a whole lot of "new."

So, as far as I can tell, Metro may succeed on pads, but I have my doubts about it on PCs.
