Inode, > I think what happened in the case of Trayvon, from what I've seen of it, was murder.
OK, then do you have any theories as to why the local police department took Zimmerman at his word when he said he acted in self-defense?
It's one thing to investigate thoroughly and conclude that there isn't a case against Zimmerman for murder because of conflicting accounts of the incident. (Who was assaulting who, and why?) But it's yet another thing for the authorities to just brush this case aside and accept the word of some gun-toting vigilante.
Now I know you can't resist making comparisons to the war on drugs, but come on, there were no drugs involved here. The only part of this story that has anything remotely to do with drugs is the facts that Zimmerman reported to 911 that he thought Trayvon was on drugs. Which was, of course, not true.
As for Obama, this case has gathered national media attention, and it involves race. Why shouldn't Obama make a statement about the case? If anything, he was treading carefully so that he wouldn't jump to conclusions (unlike the last time when he said the cops "acted stupidly").
On the other hand, I won't excuse the shameful political opportunism expressed by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. They are turning the civil rights movement into a dumb libtard mockery of itself, and that really worries me.
