Drought-free land in Texas above 10 percent again








LUBBOCK, Texas Recent rainfall across much of Texas has pulled more than 10 percent of the state out of drought status for the first time in more than a year.

The U.S. Drought Monitor map released Thursday shows 10.1 percent of the state with no drought, up from 6.98 percent last week.

The last time Texas had this much land in the drought-free stage was in February 2011, when 12.5 percent of the state showed no drought.

Less of the state is in the worst drought stage. This week, 17.9 percent is in exceptional status, down from 20.5 percent.

The cost of the state's driest year on record grew costlier this week when Texas agriculture officials upped their crop and livestock loss estimate to a record $7.6 billion.
