He whispered something to himself ... some are hearing 'coons', some are saying it was 'punks'. There is a youtube of an audio analyst who graphically examines the tape and shows 'punks' fits better.

FWIW.........I hear the distinctive P sound at the beginning of the word. I'd say Punk. I've never heard coon in real conversation.
