My brother was brutally murdered by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run. His killer was back on the street after serving 3 years in prison, and last I heard, was still drinking and driving. I'd much rather he had received serious treatment for his alcohol addiction than to have served time in prison; it might well have saved someone else a lot of pain and grief.

Good thing the guy was using that 'safe' drug, alcohol. Sorry to hear about your brother, I've got one like that too. Be prepared, if you continue this discussion, it's hard to talk sense to a wall.
