I'm betting that in most state and local governments you could cut the building and planning staff by 50% and services would not be changed. I wish we - meaning Krugman, politicians and all of the public - could get to the realization that there is huge differences between different public service jobs. Until we will acknowledge that impact that housing has on this recession - and address that issue with the understanding these jobs aren't coming back - the sooner we could move on. <<<< cutting 5% of staff at the state level creates more unemployment and damages the economy>>>> Yup and why bubbles should be avoided. The length of this recession is because all efforts are being made to stop the unstoppable. That being the deleveraging of the consumer.
