Well John, the point I was trying to make was that if the workers aren't doing anything because of lack of demand - you can make deep cuts. I'm betting that in most state and local governments you could cut the building and planning staff by 50% and services would not be changed. I wish we - meaning Krugman, politicians and all of the public - could get to the realization that there is huge differences between different public service jobs. Until we will acknowledge that impact that housing has on this recession - and address that issue with the understanding these jobs aren't coming back - the sooner we could move on.

Yup and why bubbles should be avoided. The length of this recession is because all efforts are being made to stop the unstoppable. That being the deleveraging of the consumer.
