Improvements in AMTX's algorithms since '95 are not reflected in the chips. to add features, change algorithms, or fix bugs, MOT would have to go back and design a new chip and possibly re-license DMT from AMTX. think of it as an Intel processor with Windows 95 hardwired in silicon. If Microsoft added a new feature, Intel would have to design a new chip. The TXN C6x DSP is a general-purpose processor: it's software programmable and can perform a wide range of tasks. AMTX ADSL is implemented on the C6x as software which is executed on the fly by the DSP. it's easier to write software than to design hardwired chips, and that you can correct, improve, and extend the software without changing the chip. This is like how PCs are today: a general-purpose CPU (Intel) running upgradable software (Windows). A Windows update or patch doesn't require Intel to design a new CPU. mark
