Medgar Evar's case was solved 50 years after he was murdered, when most people in town knew who the killer was.

townspeople in iraq and afghanistan didn't tell u s a troops who were planting roadside bombs - although they knew.

pakistanis didn't tell u s a where bin laden was although they knew.

i went to a black church in my home town as a kid. finally, the mayor came - very late. he said we should have had a bigger crowd next time if we wanted him to come again.

he didn't know english too good. he was an immigrant from a group which controlled politically the town.

then charles evers spoke. he was elegant. he apologized for not speaking well as he had been educated in a segregated one room school house with no heat or plumbing.

for decades now the mayor has been black but that immigrant group still (at least as of a decade ago) controls the funds for the schools, although they always went to parochial schools even when they constituted the plurality of the town.

when my son was in elementary school, parents of my son's friend came over to me in the playground. they had heard where i had grown up. they had a country house - the former mayor had the nicest house in the town. they knew he had been mayor of my home town. they knew he must have been a corrupt mayor.
