I was living in the time if sharpton- brawley and no one to my knowledge, even amongst new york liberals ,would have considered sharpton to be a moderate at that time. He acted more like an extortionist and to compare him to mkl in any way shape or form is not appropriate. in fact I would have considered Sharpton more radical than what I have seen of Malcolm X. At least Malcolm X had some sort of framework to couch his ideas in. Sharpton was literally a rabblerouser, who would threaten a riot if he didnt get what he wanted.
