That's reminiscent of "Dead Peasant Insurance." It's regulated now, but it involves companies taking out insurance policies on their employees with the employer as the beneficiary. Wal-Mart did it the most and at one time they had policies on over 350,000 employees with Wal-Mart as the beneficiary. Michael Moore made a movie that discussed the practice in 2009. I don't like him, but employers gambling on their employees lives is creepy. There's a list of 215 companies here.
