Bravo, unclewest! Beautifully said.
This president has overstepped his constitutional bounds so often, and so egregiously, that I suspect that the question of constitutionality doesn't even come up in his mind anymore (if it ever did) when he considers how many billions in 'stimulus' money he is going to dole out to corporations that mirror his political agenda, or corporations whose decision-makers support him politically, or what kind of oppressive edict one of his agencies is going to issue, or what new czar-level position he wants to create, or how many behind-closed-doors promises he is going to make to our ideological enemies, or how many undeclared wars he is going to involve our military in without the advice or consent of congress.
But his comment that an 'unelected group of people' might actually have the audacity to 'overturn a duly constituted and passed law' makes all of his other atrocities pale in comparison.
He is banking on the fact that the average American no longer comprehends the concept of separation of powers. He is banking on the fact that the average American believes that the fact that Supreme Court justices are appointed rather than elected makes them somehow subservient to the other two branches of government. And he is banking on the fact that the average American no longer comprehends the intent, or the immeasurable historical value, of the Constitution itself.
Virtually everything he does depends on his reliance on the ignorance (of civics and history) of the American citizenry. He is planning on being re-elected based on that same reliance. If he ran on his genuine record, and if the mainstream media reported that record accurately and described the assault on the Constitution that it truly represents, not only would he lose in November, but he would have been impeached months ago.
The fact that the latest polls show him regaining a measurable lead over either republican contender makes one wonder whether his most astute political attribute might indeed be his reliance on the ignorance of the American voter. Under the rule of law, our president is a criminal. His approval rating should rightfully be in single digits, and any potential republican nominee should be leading him by a landslide margin for that reason alone. Let's hope the electorate takes a crash course in the Constitution sometime between now and November 6th. |
