The guy ended up dead because he assaulted Zimmerman and it was a damn good thing Zimmerman was armed or he may very well be dead. Again he did not follow him - but was trying to keep an eye on him to tell the police where he was. and killer apparently isn't even a suspect. Because there's no crime - a violent assault (the crime) was stopped by a legally armed citizen. Hurray for the good guys!!! Well, I haven't followed the story like you have perhaps, but my understanding is that it isn't quite as cut-and-dried as you suggest.
