ElM, Easter is about the all-powerful state murdering an individual who thought that individuals could deal with each other on a peer to peer basis leaving the government out of the deal. The Roman bosses were not going to take kindly to that line of thinking and didn't. Ironically, the Catholic church which descended directly from Christianity, Mary and whatnot, took over in Rome and in a lot more places too. They then set about holding heresy trials and serious punishment for heretics. Now, we have the same old problem with the states rampantly totalitarian, with individuals mere productive nodes in the state apparatus. No externality permitted. The reason they have models of Jesus on the cross is a permanent warning to everyone about what will happen to you if you defy the church or the state. Most people are in favour of such repression.
