The problem stems from thinking the independents are liberals, they're not.

A lot of independents are libertarians. And what they want is less government intrusion on both the economy and their personal lives. Freedom across the board. They're just as turned off by blue nosed conservative theocrats as they are by the policies of the current socialist/fascist administration.

This election is about the economy and restoring the ideals of growth and freedom that have made this country great. Tax policy, deficits, energy production, crippling regulations of the nanny state and big brother are issues that matter to me, as well as a lot of "independents".

I personally couldn't care less about birth control and gay marriage and all the yowling about racism that's currently going on. This country and the rest of western civilization is getting awfully close to the edge of the cliff, and if we go over it and collapse into depression and chaos, then no one is going to much care about "free" birth control or other such trivial issues.

Rightly or wrongly, the media painted Santorum as a radical theocrat, which rendered him unacceptable and unelectable to a majority of voters. And that's why his campaign is toast.

If Romney (flaws and all) is elected and backed by a strong, free enterprise Congress, there is still a chance to turn the ship of state before it hits the rocks. I'm not holding my breath, however..
