I don't understand why that thing went unchallenged. If the story is true it was aware of its competition by referring to others, apparently, as like itself. In fact, it was clearly paranoid about the idea of its territory being subjugated using threats, fear and murder to drive the point home. Why should anyone be God fearing? It wasn't referring to any Sun, rain or fertility types when it mentioned other gods. I think it was referring to extraterrestrials of its own ilk since they represented true competition. Supranatural ET's that could possibly kick its ass from here to Sunday but, for reasons unknown, never did. Maybe it was hiding. It always seemed to be hiding somewhere. Hiding its face or just hiding. Still, it didn't influence the entire planet even after launching missionaries to do just that. I still don't know how or why it got away with so much other than influence. We are easily influenced and are completely unaware of the invasiveness when it happens. Don't believe me? Ask the mother who drowned her 5 children what she was thinking that day. Ask Nazi Germany.
