It was news to me and I was a bit shocked by it, although in retrospect it was obviously an easy trick for a brain to pull on itself, though it still seems absurd that dreams which obviously have some planning in them, remain a surprise until the end. There's a pretty good Chinese Wall in there keeping the parts separate so that "I" don't know what "I" am going to come up with in "my" dream. < Dream within a dream is not that uncommon to humans. > I suppose that's somewhat how hallucinations work in schizophrenia - the person experiences things which are real to them but are not actually happening in reality. Reality, memory and imagination get tangled up all at once with no means of knowing what's real and what's not.

A related matter is dreaming, but being aware that it's a dream and therefore able to deduce "Aha, that's a dream, therefore I am in fact asleep. Good."

But how do we know we are not just all our lives asleep and just dreaming the whole thing, non-stop? The whole consciousness business is a bit of a slippery thing to get a grip on. No wonder people like gold - it seems such a solid, real, permanent thing. But abstract money could be just as good, though the state-run versions end in financial relativity theory event horizons and Black Scholes collapse into a financial singularity.
