I just called AT&T about unlocking an older iPhone, and the process couldn't be much easier. They needed the IMEI number of the phone, which they used to "open a case," as they put it. They say they will send the unlock code to me within two weeks.

Pretty much the same experience with my hand me down, free, unactivated iPhone 3g.

AT&T's phone number for this is not easy to find, so here it is: 800-331-0500 (then 1 at first prompt and 0 at second, to speak to a human).

Said they need the IMEI number (in the iPhone's Settings, under General, then About) to contact Apple with it, and make sure all is OK with my toy, from Apple's POV.

Told me I'd have the unlock code and instructions within two days. The ticket will remain open for two weeks. If I don't get emailed the code and instructions within 48 hours, I am to phone the above number again, give them (the very long) case ID #, and they'll into look it.

So, question: what's best deal for pay as you go, no contract, buy on the web sim card that works in my soon to be unlocked iPhone 3g?
