Campbell was a Universalist who had an axe to grind against any view that differed from his. Well by saying "Universalist" you mean he was free to embark upon a lifetime of study of myths as they have run commonly down thru all human societies . Simply put we do find common stories & themes going all the way back such as the great flood , garden of eden & the tree of life , Adam & Eve , virgin births , and myriad creation stories long before the Jews had barely written down anything in books .. Campbell teaches that these great myths are not "lies" but tell of that deeper need for expression of what is sacred within the life of each individual in the field of time , in this "Creation" . John the Baptist was was doing his river Jordan thing & three centuries before him they were doing the first mass baptisms in India by the 10's of 1000's in the river Ganges . Btw, you don't get into heaven if you haven't been baptized you are aware of this ? If you read any Joseh Campbell at all , he takes what is the best & most direct route of understanding the importance of all these common myths which are grounded first & foremost in relating to that great "LIFE" we all are born into & that "Creation" you either know is sacred or not . This culture & world we live in now is not the first rodeo show human beings have lived thru and if there was any ax to grind he had was already pointed out to you of the millions dying just between Shia & Sunni sects of Islam recently (Iran Iraq war) or the stand off now in the Middle East between the three great monotheisms .
