Where does all the extra money the Fortune 500 will spend on Y2K fixes come from...

The scarce resources in Y2K remediation are programmers and engineers. Money will be diverted from other areas to pay these people. Tools vendors add value by making them more productive and the IT service companies are really people brokers that collect transaction fees for matching the buyers and sellers of the services. They will both benefit, but not nearly as much as most of their stock prices imply.

The level of economic activity probably doesn't change much. It just flows in a different direction. The real risk is a serious disruption of worldwide economic activity in which everyone loses.
