So it works out the same for the carrier, right? They pay less for a customer up front, but also collect less on the back end of the contract. That puts the burden of the increased iPhone cost on the customer, who ends up paying more for having the iPhone, and not surprisingly, many choose not to do so.

In the US oddly, the customers do not save money by going with Android. They pay the same on-contract monthly rate whether the carrier had to pay the iPhone tax or the significantly lower Android subsidy.
