They spoke with him and advised him. Zimmerman admits that much, called them his "legal advisers." That's legal representation. In most, if not all states, as soon as a person requests legal advice from an attorney, and the attorney agrees to act on and provide advice to that person, an attorney client relationship is established. You don't have to "meet" someone to be their lawyer, and there doesn't have to be a case filed to withdraw from representing someone. Anytime you stop representing a person its referred to as "withdrawing" from the representation.
