Campbell was a Universalist who had an axe to grind against any view that differed from his.

"Well by saying "Universalist" you mean he was free to embark upon a lifetime of study of myths as they have run commonly down thru all human societies ."

No I mean that he was a devoted "believer" in a specific belief system which is known as Universalism.
